You can tell the story without the collars.
Josie Trinidad (Co-head of story)

The Tame collar was an early concept for Zootopia. It was a collar designed specifically for predators that would shock them to keep them from becoming too agitated.

Development[]

Mandatory for all predators, tame collars were made to keep predators from acting out of aggression and potentially hurting prey animals by shocking them when they became enraged or overly emotional. It has a light that changes color depending on the wearer's emotional state: green meaning calm and/or relaxed, yellow (the warning color) when they feel strong emotions, and red (the color that initiates the shock) when they are too emotional.

The problem with the collar is that the original story showed that it simply monitors elevated physiological changes in the predator wearing it, but can't tell whether the changes are caused by anger/aggression, joy/excitement or fear/panic and it shocks regardless. In addition, the collar is designed so that once it is attached to a predator, it can only be unlocked by a special key held by medical personnel and the police.

The creative team at Disney Animation Studios thought the collar would be a key plot device in the world of Zootopia, however, when they showed some of their early screenings to Pixar, they received rather negative feedback.

The Pixar reviewers said the taming collar concept made it very difficult to like the city of Zootopia given that it was willing to treat a portion of its citizens this way. They also found it hard to root for Judy because, as a member of the ZPD, she was part of the organization that enforced the wearing of the collars.

Based upon Pixar's feedback, the story was shifted to get rid of the collars and put the discriminations that come from prejudice and stereotyping in their place.

Wild Times[]

Originally the main protagonist, Nick Wilde was to run an illegal, indoor sanctuary called Wild Times which would allow predators to remove their collars. However, since the collar element was cut, the Wild Times element was also cut, and Nick became the deuteragonist instead of the protagonist.

Nick daydreaming about Wild Times

Having hurt his neck, a cautious doctor has to temporarily remove Nick Wilde's tame collar in order to examine him. Being without his collar for the first time that he can remember, he is overcome with feelings of joy and freedom. His collar is put back on seconds later, however. Nick asks the doctor for more time without it, to which the doctor replies, "If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me that." And Nick responds, "Then you'd be the richest mammal in Zootopia." This plants the seed of Nick's idea for Wild Times.

Morris' Taming Party[]

Koslov presenting Morris with his collar

Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde watch Morris' taming party as his father Koslov presents him with his tame collar. As his collar is put on, Morris is overjoyed and turns to face the crowd's applause and praising as green balloons drop, with a saddened Koslov looking on. As Morris becomes increasingly excited, Koslov calls out to his son trying to calm him down, but Morris doesn't hear him.

Morris gets more and more excited until he gets his first shock from the collar. With a hurt look on his face, Morris turns to look at his father as he realizes that his collar is not a privilege, but a cruel restriction. He then runs to embrace his father who provides a comforting hug.

Trivia[]

  • At some point during development, the collars seem to have taken the form of ear tags.[1]
