That's the beauty of complacency, Jude. If you don't try anything new, you'll never fail!
―Stu to Judy

Stu "Stuart" Hopps is a male rabbit and a character in Zootopia. He is the husband of Bonnie Hopps, the father of Judy Hopps, as well as 275 other children, and is a member of the Hopps family. He lives in the Hopps family home in Bunnyburrow.

Official Bio[]

"Stu Hopps is a carrot farmer from Bunnyburrow. Along with Mrs. Hopps, he is worried about Judy moving to Zootopia and the untrustworthy big-city mammals who live there—especially foxes."[1]

Physical Appearance[]

Stu Hopps is a bit taller than Bonnie, but is also chubbier. He has brown fur, brown eyes, and wears a green hat with a carrot design. He is seen wearing three different shirts (an orange shirt, a green plaid one, and a blue plaid one) and two different pairs of overalls (one blue and one olive green) throughout the film.

Stu is first seen at the beginning of the film, watching his young daughter Judy's play alongside Bonnie. They express concern when Judy reveals that she wants to be a police officer when she grows up. After the play, Bonnie and Stu do their best to convince Judy that she would be better off as a carrot farmer, but Judy wanders away after spotting Gideon Grey, the local bully.

15 years later, Stu and Bonnie watch Judy's graduation ceremony with a mixture of pride and concern. When they see her off at the Bunnyburrow train station, he warns her that Zootopia is full of predators. He offers her several products made to repel foxes, with Judy begrudgingly agreeing to take a small spray bottle of repellant.

Stu and Bonnie contact her later that night via Muzzletime. They greet Judy warmly, but then Stu notices that Judy is wearing a meter maid outfit, which Bonnie says is the safest job on the force. He and Bonnie celebrate loudly and Judy, annoyed, says goodbye and hangs up.

They later try to call Judy while she, along with Nick Wilde, is infiltrating Cliffside Asylum spying on Mayor Lionheart, unknowingly blowing her cover when her phone rings.

Near the end of the film, after Judy returns to Bunnyburrow after "breaking the city", Bonnie and Stu attempt to comfort her. They introduce her to a now-grown Gideon Grey, and he and Judy reconcile. They reveal that she had inspired them to do business with Gideon, who Stu says has become one of the top pastry chefs in the Tri-Burrows.

He then warns some rabbit children not to get too close to the midnicampun holicithicus flowers planted near the carrot crops, which he explains keep bugs away and once caused Judy's uncle, Terry, to go crazy after eating one of the flowers. When Gideon calls Stu's flowers by their common name of "night howlers", this provides Judy with a missing piece of the puzzle to her case. After thanking them and frantically borrowing the keys to the family truck, Judy rushes back to the city.

He and Bonnie are last seen dancing together at Gazelle's concert.

Quotes[]

Bonnie: "Oh yes, that's right, Stu. We settled hard."
  • Bonnie: "It's great to have dreams."
Stu: "Yeah, just as long as you don't believe in them too much."

Stu: "Oh, come on! When is there not a need for a fox taser?"
  • Stu: "Oh, cripes. Here come the waterworks! (cries)"
Bonnie: "Oh, Stu, pull it together!"
  • Stu: "Hey there, Jude. Jude the Dude. Remember that one? How we doing?"
  • Stu: "Because you're a trier, that's why."
Bonnie: "You've always been a trier."

  • Stu: "You catch any of that, Bon?"
    Bonnie: "Not one bit."
